| Compound Photonics has developed the next generation microdisplays for projection technologies and is currently in the process of working to bring the innovation to commercial success. The company is based in Cambridge England. Engineering and administration functions are served out of both our Cambridge office and the Phoenix, Arizona facility in the United States.
The main product of the company is a light modulator that controls the intensity of visible light for use in the digital cinema, large venue and high performance front projection and rear projection television consumer electronics markets.
The existing technologies in the marketplace are all based on large area silicon or thin film transistor technologies that are the mainstay of the very mature semiconductor industry the stars of which are microprocessor and memory devices. Unlike the technology path for the microprocessor which is based on ever decreasing transistor geometries yielding faster, lower power and of particular note decreasing surface area devices the transistor based projection technologies require larger surface areas independent of existing advances in transistor speeds and physical size.
Compound Photonics' approach allows almost unlimited scaling of the light modulators without the prohibitive cost penalty of the existing technologies while it offers significantly higher modulation efficiency. |
